Poetry

Poetry is one of my great loves. I read a lot of it and write a little of my own, too. This section is for my poetry that I post occasionally, when I’m feeling brave. Some pieces are several years old (I think you can tell from the angst that I was a teenager when I penned them) and some were written yesterday, or this morning.

Poetry, more than prose, is a visceral, raw transcription of my emotions. That being said, I want to refine my work and make the act of writing poetry about my growth as a writer, just as I do with my prose.

My influences and inspirations range widely, from Shakespeare’s sonnets, to Walt Whitman’s Leaves of Grass, to Emily Dickinson, Anne Sexton, Li-Young Lee, and Mary Oliver, and even contemporary musicians including Fiona Apple, Sufjan Stevens, and Aaron Weiss of mewithoutyou. Like I said, I love a variety of poets and styles, although my style is my own and is largely untethered right now.

Please share your thoughts: your praise and your criticism, your suggestions, as well as any resources you have for poetry. All are more than welcome in this space. Likewise, if you have work to share, I am more than willing to allow guest posts, or to read your work and offer my own feedback.

Thanks for reading.
